You're sending cold emails. Maybe lots of them. But your reply rate is somewhere between "embarrassing" and "nonexistent."

So you do what everyone does - you blame cold email itself. "It doesn't work anymore," you tell yourself. "People ignore emails now."

Here's the thing: cold email still works. It works really well, actually. But if your conversion rate is terrible, you're probably making one (or more) of these mistakes. And the worst part? Most of them are fixable in like 10 minutes.

Mistake #1: You're Treating Everyone Like They're the Same Person

This is the biggest one. You write one email and blast it to 500 people. Maybe you swap out their name and company name. Congrats, you've just written spam.

Real personalization isn't about merging a database field. It's about showing the person that you actually looked at their situation for more than 3 seconds.

Here's what I mean:

The second one tells them you actually know what they do. That you're not running a blast campaign to 10,000 people.

Spend 60 seconds on LinkedIn or their website. Find one specific thing about their business or recent activity. Reference it. That alone will double your reply rate.

Mistake #2: Your Email Is About You, Not Them

"We help agencies scale revenue by implementing our proprietary lead generation system."

Cool story. Nobody cares.

People open emails because they wonder if you can help them solve a problem they actually have. Not because you have a system. Not because you're "experienced." Because you understand their pain and have a path forward.

Flip the script:

Here's a real example that works:

"Most marketing agencies I talk to are stuck between $50-150k/month revenue. Getting there is hard, but scaling past it is even harder because you're still trading time for money. I work with agencies that want to break that ceiling without hiring a massive team."

See? That email says nothing about the sender. It's entirely about the reader's situation and what they might want.

Mistake #3: You're Not Being Clear About What You Want

You send a 500-word email explaining everything you can do, hoping they'll just... reply with interest?

People don't have time to decode what you want. You need to ask for something specific and small.

Not: "Would love to talk about how we can help your business."

But: "Would it make sense to grab 15 minutes this Thursday to see if we're a fit?"

Or even simpler: "Do you have 15 minutes Thursday?"

Small asks get more yeses. People can commit to 15 minutes. They can't commit to vague future collaboration.

Mistake #4: You're Giving Up After One Email

You send an email. They don't reply. You move on.

Most people need to see your message more than once before they'll respond. Not because they're ignoring you - because they're busy and your email got buried.

A simple follow-up sequence changes everything:

This isn't annoying if you're adding value or changing what you're saying. People actually appreciate the reminder.

The difference between a 2% reply rate and a 6-8% reply rate is usually just having a follow-up sequence.

Mistake #5: Your Email List Is Garbage

You can write the perfect email and it won't matter if you're emailing the wrong people.

Before you send anything, ask yourself:

A list of 200 genuinely qualified people will crush a list of 5,000 random business owners.

Spend time on list building. It's boring, but it's the foundation of everything. You can have a mediocre email that works if the list is right. But you can have a perfect email that fails if the list is wrong.

So What Now?

Fix these five things and you'll see a meaningful jump in replies. Seriously. Most cold email campaigns are failing not because the channel is dead, but because one of these issues is sabotaging them.

If you want to go through this checklist yourself, great. Take a look at your last 10 emails and see which mistakes you're making.

If you want someone else to handle it - the list building, the personalization, the copy, the follow-ups, the whole thing - that's exactly what we do at BEC Growth. We work with service businesses and agencies to sign 5-20+ clients per month using cold email. We handle everything from infrastructure to reply management, so you just deal with qualified leads coming through your door.

Either way, start somewhere. Because the person who fixes even one of these mistakes today will be having very different conversations three months from now.
