Your email is sitting in someone's inbox right now. They have 47 unread messages. They're skimming through them in about 3 seconds each. Your subject line has maybe two seconds to convince them to click.
Most cold emails never get opened. Not because your offer is bad. Not because the timing is wrong. It's because the subject line sounds like every other sales email they've ever seen.
We've sent thousands of cold emails for B2B service businesses and agencies. The difference between a 15% open rate and a 45% open rate almost always comes down to one thing - the subject line. Get this right, and you're already ahead of 90% of the competition.
Why Your Current Subject Lines Aren't Working
Let me be direct. If your subject lines look like any of these, they're getting deleted:
- "Quick question about [Company Name]"
- "Opportunity for [Company Name]"
- "Follow up - [Your Name]"
- "Let's connect"
- "Partnership opportunity"
These get opened at maybe 5-10% of the time. Why? Because they could be from anyone about anything. They're generic. They don't hint at value. They don't create curiosity. Your prospect has seen these thousands of times.
The people who respond to emails like "Let's connect" are usually the ones who have nothing else to do - not the decision makers you actually want to reach.
What Actually Works - The Real Patterns
After running hundreds of campaigns, we've found that opened emails have a few things in common.
Specificity beats generality
If your subject line could apply to 10,000 businesses, it's too broad. The best subject lines show you've done your homework on that specific company.
Instead of: "Opportunity for [Company Name]"
Try: "Your pricing page needs work"
Or: "Noticed you're using [Tool] - we cut that cost in half"
This works because it shows you actually looked at their business. You didn't just grab their name from a list and mail-merge it. That matters.
Curiosity without being clickbait
People open emails when they want to know something. But if your subject line is too vague or misleading, they'll feel annoyed when they open it. That kills any chance of a response.
Good curiosity-based subject lines hint at something specific:
- "Why [Competitor] is stealing your leads"
- "Found an issue on your site"
- "Your team is probably overpaying for this"
These make someone want to open the email because there's a specific thing to find out. Not hype. Just information.
Numbers and specifics
The brain processes numbers faster than words. A subject line with a number tends to get more opens.
- "3 ways you're losing clients right now"
- "$15K/month in untapped revenue"
- "48 hours to implement this"
Numbers feel concrete. Real. Not marketing fluff.
Short enough to read on mobile
Your subject line gets cut off at about 50-60 characters on mobile. Most people check email on their phone. If your subject line goes past that, you're gambling.
Count your characters. If it's over 60, trim it down. Make every word count.
Formulas That Convert
Here are some patterns we use constantly. Steal these and customize them for your prospects.
The observation
"You're still using [old tool/process]"
"Your team is missing [obvious gap]"
"I noticed [specific thing about their business]"
This works because you're showing you've looked at their actual operation. Not guessing.
The problem you solve
"Losing money on service delivery?"
"Can't seem to scale past $X?"
"Your contract process is broken"
These work because you're hitting a real pain point. People open emails about problems they're actively experiencing.
The result promise
"How to cut your sales cycle in half"
"$40K+ in annual savings"
"Book 5 more clients this quarter"
These work when they're specific enough to feel possible, not generic enough to sound like marketing.
What To Test
The truth is - your industry, your prospects, and your specific offer all affect what works. So test.
Send one version of a subject line to half your list. Send a different version to the other half. Compare open rates after 3-4 days.
After you've run 5-10 of these tests, you'll start seeing patterns in what your specific audience responds to. Then double down on what works.
Test one variable at a time. Change just the subject line. If you change the subject line AND the email body, you won't know what actually moved the needle.
The One Mistake Everyone Makes
People think their email body matters most. It doesn't. If it doesn't get opened, it doesn't matter if the body is perfect.
Spend 30 minutes on your subject line. Spend 30 minutes on your email body. Not the other way around.
The subject line is the gatekeeper. Get that right first.
When You Have Better Things To Do
Cold email subject lines are only one piece of the puzzle. There's the lead list. The email infrastructure. The actual body copy. The sequences. The reply handling.
If you've got a service business or agency and you want to sign 5-20+ clients a month through cold email - but you don't have time to figure out all these moving parts - that's where we come in. At BEC Growth, we handle the entire operation for you. The leads, the infrastructure, the copy, the campaigns, the replies. You just close the deals.
But if you want to test this yourself first - start with subject lines. It's the fastest way to see if cold email can actually work for your business.
