You're sending cold emails. Maybe you're getting opens. Maybe you're even getting a few replies. But nobody's buying, and you have no idea why.
The frustrating part? It's probably not your fault entirely. You're just doing what everyone else does - and that's the problem.
After seeing hundreds of consultant cold email campaigns, we've noticed the same mistakes showing up over and over. Some are small tweaks. Some are major strategic shifts. All of them are costing you deals.
This is the biggest one.
Your email starts with something like: "Hi [Company Name], we help companies like yours improve their X and increase their Y." Then you explain your services for three paragraphs. Then you ask for a meeting.
Here's the thing - the person reading it doesn't care about you yet. They don't know you. And they definitely don't care about your generic pitch.
What they do care about is their specific problem. Their revenue. Their team. What's keeping them up at night.
Cold email works when you flip the script. Instead of talking about what you do, you talk about what you've noticed about them - and what it might be costing them.
An example:
"I noticed your team is still managing client onboarding manually. For agencies your size, that's usually eating up 15-20 hours per week. Wanted to see if that's even on your radar."
See the difference? It's specific. It shows you actually looked at their business. And it's about them, not you.
You can have the perfect email and still get nowhere if you're sending it to the wrong people.
Most consultants either:
None of these work.
Your list needs to be:
Spend time on this. A smaller list of perfect fits beats a huge list of maybes every single time.
Some consultants try to stand out with clever subject lines or joke-heavy email bodies. "Just checking in!" or "Quick question for you" or some pun about their industry.
It doesn't work.
People are tired. They get hundreds of emails. They're not looking for entertainment - they're looking for clarity and relevance.
Write simple. Write direct. Write like you're texting a colleague, not writing a formal letter.
Bad: "I was thinking about the challenges many firms like yours face when scaling their operations, and I thought I'd reach out to see if any of these resonate."
Good: "Quick thought - most agencies your size struggle with project profitability. Worth a conversation?"
Short. Clear. One idea. Done.
This one's simple: most people don't reply to your first email. Or your second. Or your third.
But somewhere between email four and seven, something clicks. They're less busy. The timing's better. Your message finally lands right.
The consultants winning at cold email send 5-7 follow-ups per person. The ones struggling send two, then give up.
Your follow-ups should:
Most replies come after the third or fourth touch. If you're giving up before then, you're leaving money on the table.
You send a bunch of emails. Some get replies. Some don't. But you probably don't know why.
Are opens high but replies low? Your subject line works but your email doesn't. Are open rates low? You're either hitting the wrong person or your subject line isn't interesting enough.
Track:
Every campaign should teach you something. If you're not learning what's working, you're just winging it.
This isn't a mistake in the sense of doing something wrong - it's a mistake in how you're spending your time.
Cold email works. But setting it up takes time. Finding the right leads takes time. Writing copy takes time. Managing replies and follow-ups takes time. Analyzing what worked takes time.
That's time you're not spending on client work. And if you're a consultant, client work is where you make money.
Some consultants decide to build this themselves - managing their own lists, writing their own emails, tracking their own metrics. It works eventually. But it takes months to dial in, and you're paying the opportunity cost the whole time.
Others decide it's not worth their time and just accept that their pipeline is thin and unpredictable.
There's another option - outsource it to someone who does this every day and knows what works.
At BEC Growth, we handle the whole thing. We find your ideal prospects, write emails that actually get replies, manage the follow-ups, handle the conversations - all of it. Most of our consultant clients go from sporadic leads to signing 5-20+ clients per month. More importantly, they get their time back.
