You've finally figured out who your best customers are. Your cold email is working. You're getting meetings. Life is good.
Then reality hits - you realize your current ICP is too narrow. Maybe the market is saturated. Maybe you're running out of prospects. Maybe you want to grow faster and can't do it staying in the same lane.
So you think about expanding. But here's the fear that creeps in: if you branch out, will you dilute your messaging? Will your conversion rates tank? Will you end up with leads that don't actually fit what you do?
This is the ICP expansion problem, and it's real. Most businesses either stay too narrow and plateau, or they expand too aggressively and crash their close rates.
The truth is - there's a way to expand your ICP methodically without blowing up what's already working.
Start By Understanding Your Current ICP Better
Before you expand, you need to know exactly what makes your current customers tick. Not the surface-level stuff - the real reasons they buy.
Pull up your last 5-10 clients you've actually signed. The good ones. The ones who didn't churn. The ones who were easy to work with.
Now ask yourself:
- What's their annual revenue range?
- How many employees do they have?
- What's their main pain point that made them hire you?
- What's their industry?
- What's their role - are they founders, operators, department heads?
- How long did the sales cycle take?
- What objections came up, and how easily were they overcome?
- How much are they paying you?
Write this down. Get specific. Don't say
