Most cold email advice for OEMs fails because it treats you like a SaaS company with a simple value prop. But OEM sales don't work that way. You're not selling features. The first thing to understand is that your technical buyer doesn't see themselves as a sales prospect. They see themselves as someone trying to solve a specific engineering problem - and most cold emails feel like interruptions to that work.
This means your initial email can't lead with what you're selling. It needs to lead with their problem - specifically, their integration problem or compatibility problem or supply constraint.
Bad opener: "We're a leading supplier of industrial connectors and have helped 200+ OEM companies reduce their sourcing costs."
Good opener: "I noticed [Company] is using [competitor component] in your [product line]. We've worked with three shops in your segment that switched from [competitor] due to [specific technical limitation], and cut their integration time by about 30%."
The difference: the second one acknowledges their current state, identifies a specific technical problem (not a vague "savings" problem), and gives a concrete number that matters to engineers - integration time saved, not percentage discount gained.
Most OEM cold email campaigns target the Director of Procurement or VP of Supply Chain. Those people exist, but they're not your first conversation.
Your first conversation is with the engineer or technical lead who actually has to work with your part every day. They're the ones who catch compatibility issues at 4 PM on a Friday. They're the ones who know whether a supplier's lead time is realistic. And they're the ones who will say "no" to procurement if your part is a pain to integrate.
Target the titles first: Principal Engineer, Senior Design Engineer, Engineering Manager, Technical Program Manager. LinkedIn lists these accurately enough for OEM companies. Once you get a conversation with that person, they'll bring you into the procurement decision naturally.
Your email to that engineer should skip the business case entirely and go straight to the technical case.

Subject line (15-20 characters max):
Keep it simple and technical. Avoid generic language. Examples that work:
Opening (1-2 sentences):
Show you understand their specific application or constraint. Reference a product they make, a standard they use, or a technical limitation they face. This takes 30 seconds of research but changes everything.
The value statement (2-3 sentences):
This is where you name the problem in technical terms, not business terms. Not "saves money" - "reduces integration complexity" or "eliminates thermal management issues" or "meets IEC 61010 compliance without redesign."
Social proof (1 sentence):
One other OEM company in a similar space that solved the same problem. Include a small technical detail about what they had been using and what changed. Not a vague "we've helped hundreds of companies" - "switched from [standard] to our [solution] and eliminated the thermal cycling failures they were seeing in -40 to +85C environments."
The ask (1 sentence):
Thirty-minute technical discussion to review specs. Not a "discovery call" - be specific about what you want to discuss.

This email works because it's technical (specific connector standard), specific to their world (automated assembly, cycle count), includes proof (two other medical device companies), and asks for something small (20 minutes, not a meeting).
OEM buyers are busy. Your first email might not even be read. This is where persistence with quality actually works.
Follow-up on day 3 with a slight angle - maybe a link to a technical datasheet or a case study showing thermal testing results. Follow-up again on day 7 with something different - not a repeat, but a new technical angle or a compatibility question.
Don't just repeat the first email. Change the hook. First email was about integration complexity. Third email could be about supply chain redundancy or lead time consistency.
Run 3-4 follow-ups over 14 days. At 15-18% reply rates on initial emails, your follow-up sequence should land 25-35% of your conversations in that two-week window.
Mistake 1: Talking about price or cost savings. OEM engineers don't care about price in the cold email. Procurement does, but not yet. Stay technical.
Mistake 2: Generic social proof. "We've helped 500+ manufacturers" means nothing. "We supply connectors to [specific brand] medical devices" means something.
Mistake 3: Selling features instead of solving problems. Not "our connectors have gold-plated contacts" - "our connectors maintain signal integrity in EMI-heavy environments without requiring additional shielding."
Mistake 4: Targeting procurement before engineering. You need technical buy-in first, or procurement will spike your email on the basis that "we already have a supplier for that."
For OEM companies, your list quality matters more than size. A 500-person list of actual design engineers at companies in your segment will outperform a 2,000-person generic manufacturing list every time.
Use LinkedIn with filters for industry, title, and company size. If you sell to medical device OEMs, filter for companies with 200-1,000 employees in medical devices. If you sell to automotive, filter for automotive supply companies. Narrow it down.
Then add one layer of research - find companies that are actually using your competitor's parts or an older standard you're replacing. A few minutes per prospect on their website or their product manual is time well spent. It's the difference between a generic cold email and one that shows you actually understand their world.
