Keep it short. Three sentences maximum in the body. Field research decision makers are busy people running physical operations - they don't have time for your life story.
How to Make the Research Benefit Clear
You need to give them a reason beyond "good for science" to let you in. That reason usually falls into one of three categories:
Competitive benchmark data: "We're benchmarking against 10+ facilities in your sector and can share how you compare on key metrics." This works because everyone wants to know if they're ahead or behind their peers.

Pick one that actually matches what you're doing. Don't promise data you're not collecting or insights you can't deliver.
The Follow-Up Sequence
Field research decision makers take time to respond because they have to think through liability, scheduling, and whether this is worth their time. Your follow-up needs to be brief and add information, not just repeat your ask.
Send your first follow-up 5 days after the initial email. Don't resend the same message. Instead, add one piece of new information.
