Most deeptech founders approach cold email the same way a SaaS founder does - and then wonder why their response rates tank.
The problem isn't that decision-makers won't respond. It's that you're not talking to the person who actually understands why your technology matters, and you're not explaining what you do in a way that makes sense in 30 seconds.
Deeptech is harder to email about than software. Your buyer needs to understand quantum computing, advanced materials, synthetic biology, or whatever your space is - just enough to know if it's worth their time. Most cold emails skip that step and jump straight to "let's chat." That doesn't work.
Here's what actually works for deeptech founders.
First: Target the right person, not just "decision-maker"
In deeptech, there's usually a technical gatekeeper between you and budget. That person doesn't exist in traditional SaaS. They're the VP of R&D, the Chief Technology Officer, the head of a specific research lab, or sometimes a Principal Engineer with final say on adoption.
If you email the VP of Operations asking them to adopt your quantum simulation software, they'll delete it. They don't care. The VP of Engineering cares - because they know it saves their research team 40% of computational time, which translates to faster time-to-market.
Pull your list from LinkedIn, Crunchbase, and company websites. Look for titles that include: R&D, research, technical, engineering, innovation, or the specific domain your tech touches. The opening line has to prove you understand the work
Your first sentence needs to show you know what they're actually trying to do - not just your product category. This is where deeptech emails fail most often. They're too generic.
Instead of starting with a problem everyone knows about, start with a specific constraint in their world that your technology addresses. Mention a technical bottleneck, a timeline issue, or a computational challenge that's real to them.
Here's what this looks like in practice. Let's say you've built a simulation software for molecular dynamics:
Hi [Name], I noticed [Company] published on ab initio MD simulations in the Nature Methods paper last year - that's the kind of work that typically maxes out at 100ns before compute gets prohibitive. We've been helping teams at [Similar Company] extend those timescales to microseconds without rearchitecting their workflows.
That opening does three things: it shows you've done research (you know their actual work), it names a real technical limitation (compute scaling), and it hints at what you do without overselling it.
Deeptech decision-makers will respond to this because you've proven you understand their constraint. Generic openings get deleted.
Explain the technical advantage in one sentence, not 10
This is critical. Your email can't be a white paper. But it also can't ignore the technical differentiation - because that's literally all that matters to your buyer.
Find the one technical claim that moves the needle. For most deeptech, it's one of these: speed, accuracy, scale, or cost-per-unit-of-output. Pick one. Explain it in one sentence using language your buyer already uses.
Don't say "our algorithm is more efficient." Say "our lattice Boltzmann solver converges 3.2x faster on unstructured meshes without sacrificing second-order accuracy." The specificity matters. It signals you're not bullshitting.
Here's an example email for a deeptech founder selling to researchers:
Hi [Name], Saw the protein folding work your team published last month. Most teams doing that work hit a wall around 500+ residues - sequence-to-structure prediction gets too slow to iterate on. We've built a fold-prediction architecture that handles up to 2000 residues at <500ms per pass. It's trained on AlphaFold2's approach but optimized for your exact use case - faster iteration on design cycles, not just accuracy on benchmarks. Worth a quick call to see if this maps to how you're currently working? Open Friday or Tuesday. [Name]
This email works because it names the exact constraint (500+ residue wall), gives a specific metric (2000 residues, <500ms), and explains why that matters (faster design iteration). The buyer reads this and immediately knows if you're talking about their problem or not.
Narrow your TAM to what you can actually help today
Deeptech founders often cast too wide a net. "Our quantum computing platform can help anyone doing optimization" sounds big. It kills response rates.
Instead, pick a narrow slice: "We help pharmaceutical companies accelerate molecular docking simulations by 4x." Or "We help materials labs compress 6 months of iteration into 6 weeks using AI-assisted experimental design."
Your email list should reflect that narrow focus. If you're targeting finance, energy, and biotech all in the same campaign, your message will be too vague to resonate with any of them.
Run separate campaigns by vertical. In each one, reference companies or research in that vertical. Reference their actual constraints. This takes more work upfront but your response rate will jump from 3% to 8-12% easily.
Use proof points from your actual early customers
Early deeptech customers matter. They're the only social proof your buyer will trust. Not case studies, not testimonials - specific reference to a known company doing known work.
If you have a customer, put them in the email: "We've been helping [Specific Company] at [Specific Lab] run their folding simulations 3x faster - they're now doing real-time feedback on design iterations." That's credible because it's specific.
If you don't have a customer yet, reference pilot programs, academic partnerships, or research institutions using your tech. Anything that signals "people like you are already using this."
What happens after they respond
This is where a lot of deeptech founders stumble. You get a response and now you have to actually explain the tech without losing them. A few tactical things:
- Have a 2-minute video demo ready that shows the tech in action, not a deck with benchmarks
- Lead the call with their specific use case, not your product roadmap
- Have a technical person on the call, not just business dev
- Get them a trial or limited access within 48 hours if they're interested - momentum matters
Most deeptech sales stall because founders over-explain too early. You don't need them to understand how your algorithm works. You need them to understand that it solves a problem they're actively facing.
The real bottleneck: doing this at scale
Reading this, you probably think: "Yeah, I can write one good email to one researcher." The hard part is building a campaign that does this for 50 people, 100 people, 200 people without sounding like a template.
