B2B Cold Email

Cold Email for SaaS Companies in the UK - What Actually Works (And What Doesn't)

BEC Growth·Cold Email and Client Acquisition

You're Spending Thousands on Ads and Getting Nowhere

Let's be honest. If you're running a SaaS business in the UK right now, you're probably drowning in advice about content marketing, SEO, paid ads, and "community building." All of it costs money. Most of it doesn't work.

And if it does work, it takes 6-12 months to see real results.

Meanwhile, your runway is getting shorter, and your board is asking why you can't just get some customers. So you keep throwing money at Google Ads and HubSpot webinars. And you keep getting CAC (customer acquisition cost) that makes you want to scream.

Cold email gets a bad reputation. People think it's spammy, outdated, or just doesn't work anymore. But that's only true if you're doing it wrong - which most people are.

Cold Email Works. But Only If You Do These Things Right

Here's what we've learned from working with SaaS companies across the UK - and honestly, from talking to hundreds of founders who've tried this themselves.

1. Your Email List Needs to Be Specific

This is where most people fail immediately. They grab a list of 10,000 "tech decision makers" and blast them all with the same message. Then they wonder why their reply rate is 0.2%.

The truth: you need to target specific people at specific companies that actually need what you're selling. Not vaguely need it. Actually need it.

If you're selling accounting software, you need to find finance managers at growing companies with 20-100 employees. Not "anyone with a job title containing finance." Not companies in "any industry." Specific companies, specific roles, specific pain points.

This takes time to research properly. Most people won't do it. Which means they fail before they even send an email.

2. Your Copy Needs to Sound Human

Nobody reads corporate email templates anymore. They've seen them. Your prospect has deleted 50 emails that all start with "Hi [First Name], I noticed you work at [Company] and thought you might be interested in..."

Real cold email is conversational. It's short. It references something specific about them or their company - not in a creepy way, just in a "I actually looked at your LinkedIn" way.

It gets to the point in the first sentence. It doesn't try to be clever. It doesn't have emojis or excessive line breaks.

And crucially - it asks a question that makes them want to reply. Not "Are you open to a conversation?" (nobody cares). Something that actually makes them think about their situation.

3. You Need a Real Follow-up Sequence

One email gets ignored. That's fine. Expected, actually.

Three emails in a thoughtful sequence? That's where you get replies.

But the follow-ups need to add value or have a new angle. They can't just be the same message again. That's just spam.

Good follow-ups reference the first email, share a piece of relevant content, ask a different question, or sometimes just say "hey, I know you're busy." They feel like a real conversation, not an automated sequence.

4. Your Infrastructure Needs to Be Solid

If you're sending from a Gmail account, your emails are going to spam. Not some of them. Most of them.

You need proper domain setup, SPF/DKIM/DMARC records, warming, dedicated infrastructure - the technical stuff that most founders have no idea how to handle. And honestly, most SaaS companies aren't set up to manage this in-house.

This is the unglamorous part that kills campaigns before they ever start.

5. You Need to Actually Handle Replies

This sounds obvious, but it's not. A lot of cold email campaigns fail because the founder gets 5-10 replies and then doesn't know what to do with them. Or they get buried and forgotten about.

Every reply is a conversation. It needs to be treated like one. The person on the other end is interested enough to write back. They deserve a real response, not an automated follow-up.

What Happens When You Get All These Right

When you nail the targeting, the copy, the follow-up sequence, the infrastructure, and the reply handling - the numbers look like this:

For a SaaS company trying to hit product-market fit, that's enough. That's real, predictable revenue. That's cash flow you can count on.

And unlike ads, it doesn't stop working when you stop paying. Your domain reputation gets stronger. Your email list gets warmer. Your response rates actually improve over time.

The Honest Problem

All of this takes work. It takes expertise. It takes someone who has done this 50+ times and knows exactly what breaks and why.

Most founders try to DIY this. They spend 2-3 months setting it up, sending 50 emails, getting no replies, and giving up.

The failure rate is high because the execution bar is actually quite high.

There's a reason some SaaS companies seem to just... get customers consistently. They're either running paid ads (expensive and unsustainable), or they've figured out cold email (cheap and compounds over time).

If You Want Help Actually Doing This

If you've read this far and thought "yeah, I don't have time to figure out all this," that's fair.

Some businesses handle their own cold email. Others bring in someone who knows what they're doing - someone who sets up the infrastructure, researches the list, writes the copy, manages the campaigns, and handles the replies.

It's not expensive compared to paid ads. And it works faster than waiting for SEO or content marketing to kick in.

If that sounds interesting, we help SaaS companies in the UK get 5-20+ customers per month using cold email. We handle all of it - the boring technical setup, the boring list research, the actual outreach, the replies. You just take the meetings and close deals.

But first - try what we've outlined here. If you can get it working yourself, great. You'll understand the mechanics, and you'll keep control of the process.

If you try and it doesn't work, you'll at least know why. And then you'll know what help actually looks like.
